T Magazine – Old Village Hall – What’s Old Is New Again
Scott Hill couldn’t have guessed that the souvenir balsam pillow he purchased on a trip to Maine would be the first step toward opening his shop. But the modest keepsake became a retail catalyst when Hill contacted the manufacturer and custom ordered 50 “Greetings from the Catskills” pillows, which he arranged to sell in a friend’s shop near his country home in Andes, N.Y. Encouraged by the demand for memorable gifts, Hill opened two seasonal stores of his own in Andes, before establishing a permanent East Village flagship…

Sparrow Hall has some lovely word for Old Village Hall
While developing Two Blue Wolves and Nightwork, I thought a lot about the “product” I was bringing to the market. As a transmedia storyteller working in so many mediums at once, it was hard to pin down exactly what that was at first. At some point I realized that my product was the story itself, that central narrative thread, which, in my case, can take many forms—a book, a song, a video, a piece of art. So if this product of mine were to live in a brick-and-mortar store, what kind of place would that be?…..

This year we have found some incredible sites offering just the thing to make your loved one feel extra special this holiday season. Get on it, we are only weeks away!…..

Time Out New York: Best Indie Shops, April ’10
Scott Hill’s 200-square-foot old-timey shop feels a bit out of place in the grungy East Village in all the best ways. Glass cases house stuffed foxes and dusty country-chic knickknacks, reupholstered chairs neatly line the walls, and used books tower above a reading nook in the back. One-of-a-kind finds include vintage paint-by-numbers paintings, colonial soldier paper-doll statues and mounted antlers, though we’re also smitten with the selection of screenprinted pillows and tote bags. 170 E 2nd St between Aves A and B (212-677-7307, theoldvillagehall.com)
Manhattan Users Guide , March ’10
Old Village Hall, 170 E. 2nd [A/B] 212.677.7307, is a small shop with outsized talent and taste. Scott Hill, a former Ralph Lauren window creator, transforms vintage furniture with hand-screened fabrics, creates great throw pillows (including balsam pillows that bring a warm, Christmasy scent to your couch), and carries cranny-enhancing objects that he prices fairly. He makes early Americana, a recurring motif, blend beautifully with contemporary styles. Pillows range from $10-$125, the sailboat bookends pictured are $120, the antique ceramic milk bottles are $100, the chain wallet is $85, furniture starts at $300 and tops out at $2500 or so.
New York Magazine Online Dec. ’09
After years dressing windows for Ralph Lauren, he detoured in 2004 to launch his own home-design store in upstate New York, Old Village Hall. This winter, he opened a second location in the East Village (170 E. 2nd St., nr. Avenue A; 212-677-7307), selling everything from reupholstered furniture and screen-printed pillows to deer antlers and vintage toy soldiers.
Now popular enough to warrant a a book on the subject, there’s no end in sight for the “dark nostalgia” movement that’s taken hold of restaurants, hotels and boutiques the world over. New York’s East Village just got it’s latest injection in the form of Old Village Hall, a small, affordable housewares boutique started by former Polo Ralph Lauren window dresser Scott Hill.
