Lately I’ve been thinking again about Chris Whitley. I remember years ago going to see him play at Brownies. Packed back to the windows. Smoke in the air and drinks flowing liberally. The bass player and drummer were utterly solid and faultless. The sound in the room was fantastic. Whitley’s guitar work was abstract and somehow laser guided at once. Everyone was blown away. I still think about that show. He seemed sort of shy. Vocal delivery was slinky. He took deep pulls on smokes between songs. Fidgeted with his tuning throughout.
